About This Service

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for the support workers who help you with everyday tasks in your home — so you can live as independently as possible. It is designed for people who need a high level of support for most or all of the day, often including overnight and around-the-clock care.

SIL pays for the support — not the home itself. It does not cover your rent, board or groceries; those remain your own everyday costs. The physical, purpose-built housing is a separate NDIS support called Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), and some people are funded for both.

Many people in SIL share a home with housemates who also have NDIS funding, so a support worker can assist more than one person. SIL can also be delivered if you live on your own. Whatever your situation, Mayah Care works with you and your Support Coordinator to build a Roster of Care that reflects exactly how much support you need across the week.

You need active support and supervision for many hours a day, often including overnight or 24/7.

Are moving out of home

You're ready to leave the family home or hospital and want the right support to make it work.

Want to live with others

You'd like to share a home with compatible housemates and share the support of a worker.

Prefer to live alone

You want your own place with one-to-one support, where your assessed needs make that the right fit.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about SIL — and how to get started with Mayah Care.

What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is funding for the support workers who help you with daily tasks in your home. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is funding for the physical home itself — a building designed for people with very high support needs. SIL pays for the people who support you; SDA pays for the bricks and mortar. Some participants are funded for both, but they are separate supports, and SIL does not cover your rent.
Does SIL pay my rent or groceries?
No. SIL funding can only be used for disability support — the help a support worker gives you. It cannot be used for rent, groceries or everyday living expenses. You still pay your own rent and board, like any other tenant, and cover your own daily costs.
Can I choose who I live with?
Yes. Many people in SIL share a home with housemates who also have NDIS funding, which lets a support worker assist more than one person. You have a say in who you live with and how your home runs. SIL can also be delivered if you live alone, depending on your assessed support needs.
How do I get SIL funding in my NDIS plan?
SIL is generally for people who need a high level of support for most or all of the day. An occupational therapist or allied health professional usually assesses your support needs, and your Support Coordinator helps you find a provider and submit a Roster of Care to the NDIA. If you have SIL funding, you are also funded for a Support Coordinator. Mayah Care can talk you through it — call us for a free conversation.
Do you offer shared or individual SIL arrangements?
We support both. We can provide support in a shared home with compatible housemates, or one-to-one support if you live on your own. We work with you to build a Roster of Care that reflects how much support you need across the week, including overnight and active-overnight support where required.
