Two Important NDIS Supports Explained
If you are new to the NDIS — or helping a family member navigate their plan — two terms that often cause confusion are Support Coordination and Plan Management. They sound similar, but they are very different supports that do very different things.
What Is Plan Management?
Plan Management is a financial service. A Plan Manager acts like a bookkeeper for your NDIS funds. They handle invoices, pay providers on your behalf, keep track of your budget, and provide monthly statements so you always know how much funding you have remaining.
Key benefits include access to unregistered providers, no financial admin for you, budget visibility, and it is free to you — Plan Management is funded separately in your NDIS plan.
What Is Support Coordination?
Support Coordination is about helping you understand, implement, and make the most of your NDIS plan. A Support Coordinator helps you find the right providers, connect with community supports, resolve problems, and build your confidence and capacity to manage your own supports over time.
A good Support Coordinator will help you understand your plan, research providers, coordinate multiple services, assist with Service Agreements, attend plan reviews, and connect you to community supports beyond the NDIS.
Can You Have Both?
Yes — and many participants do. Your NDIS plan may fund both Support Coordination (from your Capacity Building budget) and Plan Management (from a separate line in your plan). Having both means expert navigation and expert financial management working together for you.
