About This Service

What is Life Skills Development Support?

Development of Daily Life Skills is an NDIS Capacity Building support designed to help participants build practical independence in everyday tasks. Rather than doing things for you, this support teaches and practises real skills so you can do more for yourself over time.

Life skills support covers an enormous range of activities — cooking and nutrition, budgeting and financial literacy, using public transport, cleaning and home maintenance, social skills and communication, managing appointments, online safety, and much more. The support is always tailored to your specific goals and what matters most in your daily life.

This support is funded under the Capacity Building — Daily Activity budget in your NDIS plan. Because it is capacity building, the goal is always increasing independence — helping you need less support over time, not more.

Social & Communication Skills

Building confidence in social situations, practising conversations, understanding social cues, and developing the communication tools that make it easier to connect with others.

Progress Tracking

We document your progress against goals and share regular updates with you, your family, and your Support Coordinator — keeping everyone aligned and informed about what is working.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this service — and how to get started with Mayah Care.

What kinds of skills does life skills development cover?
Life skills support can cover: cooking, meal planning and nutrition; budgeting and money management; cleaning, laundry and home maintenance; using public transport; online safety and digital literacy; managing appointments and healthcare; social skills and communication; shopping and errands; and more. The skills we focus on are entirely driven by your goals and what you need most in your daily life.
How is life skills development different from personal care support?
Personal care support (Core Supports) involves a worker doing tasks with or for you. Life skills development (Capacity Building) focuses on teaching you how to do tasks more independently over time. The goal is to build your capability, not just provide ongoing support. Many participants benefit from both types of support at the same time.
How long do life skills sessions run?
Session length is flexible and depends on the skill being developed and your plan funding. Sessions typically run 1-3 hours. Your NDIS plan specifies your budget for this support, and Mayah Care can help you use it efficiently to make the most progress within your available hours.
Can life skills development help with social anxiety or confidence?
Absolutely. Many participants use life skills sessions to gradually build confidence in social situations — starting small and building up over time. While this is not a therapeutic service like counselling or psychology, consistent, encouraging skill-building support can significantly improve social confidence and quality of life.
