About This Service

What is NDIS Community Participation Support?

Community participation support helps NDIS participants get involved in social, recreational, and community activities — things that most people do naturally but that can be harder to access when you have a disability. This includes everything from attending a sporting event or community group to volunteering, taking a class, or simply visiting friends.

This support is funded under the Core Supports budget (Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation) and can also include Innovative Community Participation — funded under the Capacity Building budget — for programs designed to build skills, confidence, and long-term community connection.

At Mayah Care, our community participation support workers are more than just drivers or chaperones. They are active, encouraging partners who help you get the most out of every experience — while always respecting your choices, your pace, and your goals.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this service — and how to get started with Mayah Care.

What kinds of activities can community participation support cover?
Community participation support can cover a wide range of activities: social outings (cafes, parks, shopping), attending community events and festivals, visiting friends and family, sporting and recreational activities, classes and workshops, volunteering, attending faith-based or cultural events, and joining community groups. The key is that the activity must align with your NDIS goals around social participation, community access, or independence.
What is the difference between community participation and innovative community participation?
Standard community participation (funded under Core Supports) involves support to access and participate in community activities. Innovative Community Participation (funded under Capacity Building) is more structured and program-based — it focuses on building skills that lead to greater independence and long-term community inclusion. Your plan may fund one or both, depending on your goals.
Can community participation support include transport to activities?
Yes — getting to and from activities is often part of the support. Travel to community activities can be funded through your NDIS plan as part of community participation, or separately through Travel and Transport support. Mayah Care can help you understand how your transport needs can be covered within your plan.
Can I choose what activities I want to do?
Absolutely. Choice and control is a core principle of the NDIS, and community participation support is entirely guided by what you want to do and what is in your NDIS plan goals. Our support workers are there to enable your participation — not to decide what is good for you.
